Previous research carried out by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) has suggested that improved route guidance could lead to national savings in resources of hundreds of millions of pounds each year. There are clearly many ways by which drivers can be given such information ranging from improved maps and signposting to sophisticated electronic in-car information systems. One of the key features of any electronic system is a database containing information describing the road network. SIA has been working with the Department of Transport (DTp) for more than 10 years supplying transport modelling services for use in the planning of the UK's motorway and trunk road network. Out of this work has been developed a computer system which allows the DTp's current road network database, the Present Year Network File (PYNF), to be interrogated to provide optimum journey information.
