The rapidly reducing cost per bit of suitable storage media has renewed interest in on board vehicle navigation systems requiring large amounts of stored data. Lucas Electrical Electronics and Systems are currently developing a 'navigator' which provides the level of navigational aid that is made possible by recent advances in memory technology. This talk is to describe how the system will work, and how some of the problems ecountered were solved. A system using the method of compressed partition trees described have many desirable features: a) the computed routes are reliable as they are based on well defined principles that produce predictable results, b) the computed routes are repeatable, c) the routes are optimum (and based on a sound and extensive data base), d) these optimum routes could result in a reduction in fuel consumption, greater utilization of the road network etc, e) excellent diversions can be calculated around serious hazards, in advance. Increasing the ease with which a driver can specify the origin and destination points of his journey will remove this big obstacle to user's acceptance of this system. This may be achieved by permitting the driver to input the road numbers associated with the desired origin and destination 'junctions', instead of consulting a directory or map.
