Electromagnetic methods have been proposed as a tool to be used in geophysics to determine the electrical properties of sediment and rock below the bottom of the oceans. If, for instance, transmitting and receiving antennas are lowered off ships, it is hoped that the field detected in the water by the receiving antenna will give information about the rock and sediment layers below. The direct field traveling through the sea water from transmitter to receiver attenuates quickly since the water is highly conducting. Instead, a special type of wave which travels through the rock layers will dominate. This is called a lateral wave.
