The goal of this project is to show the technical possibility of the use of photovoltaics to provide energy to a car. More specifically, the project has to demonstrate that a photovoltaic installation covering the roof of a typical garage (10-20 m2) provides a large fraction of the daily energy needed to drive an electrical car over a daily distanc of 40 km (typical for an average car). The Heverlee Campus of the University of Leuven, Belgium, was selected for the demonstration. Originally the car was meant to be used by the daily mail service on the Campus. During the realisation of the project the actual use of the car had to be redefined. Today, the car is used by the ASAT laboratory for daily trips between the laboratory and several destinations in downtown Leuven. This was necessarily due to reliability problems which made the car unsuitable to be driven by people without sufficient technical background. Leuven is situated about 20 km east of Brussels. The site of the plant is located along the railroad connecting Leuven with Ottignies, near the buildings of the technical services.
