Outlines of the Japanese National Railways communications networks are described in this paper. They include the MARS network and the DACS network. MARS is a nation-wide seat reservation system with a dedicated network and DACS is a general purpose packet switching network, both of which play an important role in the railroads transportation services for passengers and goods. The Japanese National Railways has a privately owned nation-wide communications network with a total length of 38 million circuit-km, which plays an important role in train operation, maintenance work, transportation of passengers and goods, and administration. The network utilizes a variety of transmission media. Open wires alongside the railroads were the basis of most of the original carrier systems. Now, these have been replaced by either cable circuits over relatively short distances or microwave links and coaxial cable circuits over long distances. Optical fiber cables and domestic communications satellites are also beginning to be introduced.
