The value of avionics operator training may be significantly enhanced through the use of microwave signal simulators which can be simply programmed to provide the ECM type waveforms expected to be encountered during actual operation of radar, communications and navigation systems. Many existing signal simulators using frequency synthesizers provide waveforms of high accuracy and stability but are large, complex and limited in modulation capabilities. Through the use of temperature-stabilized, wideband voltage controlled oscillators and dual-gate GaAs FET amplifiers, signal frequencies and amplitudes can be independently controlled by high-speed digital and analog waveform generators to produce virtually unlimited modulation characteristics. The overall circuitry is relatively simple and can be compactly packaged which may allow for usage as BITE waveform generation as well as for external simulator training aids.
