The role of the map in the cockpit has traditionally been limited to navigation charts and flight information publications. These paper products are relied upon to visually locate landmarks, waypoints and objectives; interpret radar returns; identify navigation aids; avoid terrain and obstacle impact and return aircraft and crew safely. The time has come to look beyond these traditional roles and define the mapping needs of the electronic cockpit. As the major producer of Mapping, Charting and Geodesy (MC+G) products for the defense community, the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA), will be responsible for providing the digital map data to meet both the R and D and operational requirements of advanced avionics systems. It is the objective of this paper to inform avionics developers and users of DMA's capabilities, limitations and goals in the area of digital MC+G data.
