Starting in 1978 a developmental system was designed by Sperry Corporation's Flight Systems Unit and McDonnell Aircraft Corporation (MCAIR) to test the feasibility of a digital map in a tactical fighter aircraft. This system was flown in an extensive flight test program using an advanced two seat version of the F-15 and a high resolution radar. The net result was a significant improvement in bombing accuracy, target cueing, navigation, and INS latitude/longitude updates. This system presented a vector graphics type digital map showing such feature data as roads, rivers, cities, power lines, dams, railroads, obstructions, etc. The data base was constructed by MCAIR by digitizing existing paper maps. The system consists of dual symbol generators, a mass storage device and four display units. The initial system utilized only monochromatic raster displays. An updated system later added a color stroke display. This paper will discuss the complete developmental system implementation and summarize the results.
