This paper describes the Electronic Air Suspension (EAS) system developed by Ford Motor Company. The recent technological advances in microprocessor units (MPU) along with the challenge to improve the ride quality of today's downsized vehicles created the impetus to design and develop the EAS. The brain for this system is a single chip MPU. The vehicle information required to control the system is provided by three electronic 'Hall effect' height sensors, a brake switch, the ignition switch and each door switch. The components controlled by the MPU are an electric air compressor with regenerative dryer and four air springs with integral solenoids.
