During 1979-82 Inland Motor designed and fabricated a 50000 lb. output linear electromechanical actuator as part of a program to determine the feasibility of replacing the hydraulic actuators on the Space Shuttle with EMA's. The motor used to drive the actuator was a quad redundant brushless d.c. motor, a new design whose performance and failure modes cannot be referenced to standard brush type or brushless motors. Because of the importance of this type of motor to the proposed concept of Electromechanical actuation a program was undertaken to investigate the utility of electromagnetic torque summing and the effects of shorted turns and windings. This paper describes the tests and their results.
