A study was initiated in order to determine if sufficient data existed in the Defense Mapping Agency (DMA) digital data bases for use on new sub-systems being designed for current and near term operational aircraft. The study was begun at Wright-Patterson AFB and was completed at Sperry Flight Systems. Numerous digital data bases exist, however, the detail nor specification for some of them are unavailable to the public. The study attempted to catalog the various data bases with as much information as was available. The use of the digital data bases are multi-varied. In some cases, the data base exists for a single application in one of the military services. The study attempted to define the use/application for most of the digital data bases. The study also attempted to define the future potential of each of the data bases and whether or not new areas of coverage would be included in updates. In order to determine if aircraft systems hould be designed with and dependent on DMA digital bases, the study tried to determine when the future data base products would be available.
