In order to improve maneuverability, increase range, maximize speed and lighten aircraft, designers are increasingly turning to the use of active control systems. These active controllers enable aircraft to not only be more maneuverable, yet control flutter which may be induced in some flight regimes. This paper discusses the design of a controller which is limited to controlling only the lateral stability characteristics of a jet transport. The flight mechanics of which, an well as the constraints, are accurately described by Blakelock. Upon analysis the transport is found to have an unstable spiral divergence which is shown to be controllable by means of SISO operators. These are obtained thorugh the usual decoupling strategies. This procedure is followed in the case of the jet transport described by Blakelock, and a MIMO transfer function is determined, wich is presented in the paper. The MIMO analog control system is then used to control the aircraft in a separate simulation. The results are shown in the paper. The conclusion is, there is little difference between the action of the analog controller obtained from identification procedures and the original digital controller. It is further concluded that the SISO controller described by Blakelock is not as effective as the analog MIMO control system developed in this paper.
