On a large manned orbiting station which is modular and metallic many systems by necessity will be optical systems. Major operational factors which must be considered in such an environment include: (1) electromagnetic interference and reflective echoes, (2) data bandwidth requirements, (3) zero-gravity operations, (4) data security, (5) safety and (6) modular expansion of the Space Station structure. (1) Conventional communication systems that would meet the needs of the Space Station are large and bulky and therefore unsuitable for the Space Station, where space for hardware will be at a premium. The cost of launching equipment also dictates the use of other than conventional hardware. The conventional method of producing high temperatures which converts solar energy to electricity and then to heat is highly inefficient. An efficient heat generation system for use in powering materials processing furnaces and other laboratory systems is greatly needed.
