A computer model has been developed for a cathodically protected well casing which is unique in that it includes effects on non-linear polarization phenomena upon the casing response to applied cathodic protection current. The model accommodates multiple casing strings for an individual well, and takes into account ground resistivity variations with depth, in order to realize a more accurate simulation of reality. The model also has the capability of computing surface potential profiles developed about a well due to ground currents flowing in a gas storage field. The principal features of this model are: The downhole protection current distribution and polarization potential profiles for the casing can be calculated. Downhole interference conditions which may distort the intended current distribution are predictable, thus allowing for mitigation design. The model can act as a vehicle for the interpretation of surface measurements which reflect some aspects of downhole casing corrosion conditions.
