Hydrogen and oxygen evolution and oxygen reduction have been studied on lead, lead/antimony and lead/calcium/tin alloy rotating disc electrodes and on battery electrodes. The rate of oxygen recombination has been determined at electrodes in excess electrolyte and starved electrolyte conditions and the maximum recombination rate confirmed in sealed 25 Ah cells. Batteries employing Pb/Ca/Sn alloy have been shown to be thermally stable on constant potential charge and to have improved high rate performance compared with conventional batteries.
