Maritime satellite communication providing telecommunication between ships at sea and land subscribers was introduced by the MARISAT system in August, 1976. In INMARSAT organization was established in July, 1979 to provide maritime satellite communication on an international basis, and commenced operation on February 1, 1982, taking over the MARISAT system's role. This paper describes the system configuration and features of Japanese coast earth and network coordination stations (CESs and NCSs) in the INMARSAT system. Typical features are: (1) reduction of antenna L-band sidelobes using multiple sub-feedhorns and frequency selective reflecting surface (FSRS), and (2) highly reliable network control processor (NCP) for the CES and access controller for the NCS, utilizing a communication oriented processor.
