In researching the design of a spaceborne processor, it became apparent that the partitioning of the design could have as great an effect on its performance and reliability as would the basic architecture. While partitioning a processor so as to optimize the usage of integrated circuit real estate may result in a high performance processor, the implication for highly reliable processors is that they will be of either the voted redundancy or multiprocessor type. Both of these architectures have limitations making them undesirable for a space application. The architecture suggested here is internally redundant and parallel, and includes fault tolerance as a basic features, providing rapid recovery from failures, tolerance of higher numbers of failures, and more graceful degradation. It will be partitioned into VLSI components so as to maximize its reliability and performance.
