Nowadays modern shipboard combat systems, however diverse in nature, share a common charactertistic; that regardless of the functional structure, most if not all data processing is done in one large computer. In the past two decades these computers have grown larger, faster and more capable. The results in these development efforts has been concentration of processing and control in a single or a limited number of digital computers. Virtually every warship has a very vulnerable point which if hit, would lose overall system capability.
