The major mechanism of the susceptibility of vehicle electronic modules is by conduction of the energy to the module and a radiated susceptibility test method is not appropriate for module EM testing. A suitable CS test method, the bulk current injection method has been reported and some of the results obtained to date discussed. Approximate values for the normalised peak and average currents induced are given and correlation between the CS module test on a bench and the RS tests in an anechonic chamber have been shown to be in agreement with the results obtained in a free field environment. A statistical model for the relationship between loom bulk and core currents have been derived but requires further evaluation. Since any EMC solution for vehicles must have not more than a trivial impact on unit production cost a plan of further research into differing areas of the total EMC problem of vehicle electronics is suggested; any EMC solution found must be implemented at the earliest possible stage in the design cycle.
