So far, even though advances recently have been rapid in marine communications and electronics, there is much to be done. Global standardization is still needed in VHF, HF, and even satellite applications. In navigation this may be eventually possible with NAVSTAR, but much remains to be done to enable HF and VHF/DF to be generally useful and to settle which existing system shall continue into the future. Our radars work well but here, too, advances in hardware, in automatic aids to plotting, in radar beacons, in presentation, e.g., color, of all types of information to the human navigator will come. In the ship fibre optics is the clear solution of many problems that will get voice as well is increasingly made of LSI devices. Power supply systems and electronics system need consideration together. The FGDSS, too, poses many problems especially in the transition stage. Perhaps as important are the action needed on the landward side, especially in those areas of the world where the need for commerce is high but marine facilities for communication - SAR need development.
