In the past decade there has been a tremendous growth of interest in the life cycle costing approach in reducing the ownership cost of the system. However, the majority of the models reported in the literature pertain to a specific situation and their universal applicability has not been advocated. In this paper the LCC models are classified along three general lines, i.e. conceptual models, heuristic models and analytical models. Further, the analytical models have been grouped into three types, i.e. Design trade models, total cost models and logistic and support models. Many parameters which affect the life cycle costs of the system and are the sources of model uncertainties have been identified. It is concluded that regardless of the type of LCC model used for any system, there will always be some uncertainty associated with the model since the predictions of input variables are always based on less than complete consideration of all the variables involved. A true complete analysis would entail identifying all the variables, determining their nature and limits, their functional relationships and so on. However, the achievement of such an analysis could result in cost ineffectiveness, i.e. the cost of uncertainty in the models may be less than the cost and time required for such an attempt.
