This paper presents an overview of the areas of application being considered by DG Ships, concentrating on machinery surveillance systems and giving some of the 'lessons learnt' as a result of these developments. From the development work undertaken on these surveillance systems, a number of valuable lessons have been learnt, not entirely without pain. The results of this work are now being used to specify the requirements for the ship systems, with the expectation that the development of these systems will run to time and cost. Undoubtedly, new problems will arise with in-service use and support of these systems; it remains to be seen whether the requirements specified as a result of the experience gained to date will be sufficient to minimize the effects of these problems.
