In order to assess the suitability of high temperature secondary batteries for future spacecraft with large power system requirements, a limited spacecraft design study was performed utilizing and advanced design sodium-sulfur cell as the basic unit of the battery. As well as evaluating the feasibility of the concept of utilizing high temperature batteries in spacecraft power systems, the basic design was also used as a vehicle for the comparison of state-of-the-art and advanced concept nickel-hydrogen batteries with one another and with the high temperature battery system. The design and operation of the conceptual sodium-sulfur battery will be discussed, as will be the comparison with the various nickel-hydrogen battery concepts.
