The deficiences of current army tactical cables make them unsuitable for the need of highly mobile, rapid deployment dependable and flexible field supportable communications. Fiber Optics Transmission System (Long Haul) FOTS will replace dual coax cable (CX-11230) as the means for internodal multichannel long haul and 'down the hill' cable communications. As stated earlier, the purpose of this paper was to provide a broad based description of the FOTS(LH) system requirements and to describe some of the key equipment. As we have seen, FOTS(LH) is being developed to address those less complex, well defined, high density multichannel cabled applications in the Army. Additionally, FOTS(LH) is being developed to provide a backbone logistic and maintenance support base for all fiber optic communication applications in the Army. FOTS(LH) will interface with currently inventoried and sonn to be fielded digital equipment to provide a fiber optic unrepeatered transmission capability of six (6) km. In a repeatered mode, FOTS(LH) will be capable of operating up to sixty-four (64) km with no more than ten (10) repeaters. FOTS(LH) is to consist of basically two categories of equipment. These categories are Prime Mission Equipment and Peculiar Support, Test, and Ancillary Equipment.
