A microprocessor-based voice input system for automobiles has been developed by Nissan. A special car equipped with the voice input system was exhibited at the 1981 Tokyo Motor Show. This vehicle is designed for people who have lost the use of their arms and need to drive with their feet and legs. The voice input system is used to control ten different accessories including the front windows, windshield wipers, power seats, and remote-control outside mirrors. This special vehicle for handicapped people has been demonstrated and test driven during the past year at various locations around Japan, and public reception has been extremely favorable. The Nissan voice input system offers handicapped people three significant advantages. 1) By lessening the burden of operating troublesome and complicated switches, the driver's feet, legs, and eyes are left entirely free for driving. 2) The system can be operated by anyone, using spoken commands. 3) The system can be used without worrying about the microphone position.
