The present paper presents a 3-dimensional-transfer-matrix analysis for single-sided LIM's which have a thin aluminum sheet on the secondary laminated back-iron of different width from the primary iron width. This paper extends the transfer-matrix theory of double-sided LIM's to deal with the problem of narrower plate width for the secondary laminated back-iron. The use of transverse periodicity implies the width of aluminum sheet which is greater than that of the primary iron plus end-winding overhang. From the viewpoint of including explicitly no boundary conditions at any iron ends, this analytical method is based on the idea of considering two different regions as a fictitious-layer region which has an inhomogeneous permeability with step variations only at the iron/air boundaries, because the primary and secondary laminated irons can be assumed to be nonconducting. In the mathematical model in the y-direction as shown in Fig. 1, one fictitious-layer region IV' is a combined region of the primary iron and the airspace around its longitudinal ends and transverse edges. Another new fictitious-layer region II-1' of the secondary back-iron and the airspace beyond its transverse edges, which is mathematically described using harmonic series for inhomogeneous permeability myII-1' (y) dependent on the transverse coordinate only 4. The model in the x-direction are the same as that of reference 2 and 3. The 3-dimensional-transfer-matrix analysis of the single-sided LIM's with laminated back-iron of narrower width than half of a transverse period of the model has been made.
