An experimental local area network, ADNET (Action Data NETwork), is described which has been built at the Admiralty Surface Weapons Establishment to investigate the feasibility of distributed computing techniques for Naval shipborne command and control systems. A polled multi-drop bus communications system (ASWE Serial Highway) has been developed to support the facilities required by such a shipborne system. The hardware, protocols, error recovery techniques and associated software of the highway are described with reference to the particular needs of military systems. A distributed database management system has been designed which uses the concepts of partitioning and replication of data to provide highly reliable and flexible data management. Particular features of ADNET are its fault tolerant approach to communications and its lack of a fixed network connectivity. ADNET is being used to support an experimental programme of research in information management as it relates to shipborne computer systems.
