Electronic control systems in motor vehicles require position and angle sensors at very many different places in the vehicle. The shading-ring principle has proved particularly suitable for such application on the grounds of its robustness and flexibility. In addition to the basic properties of the sensor, reference is made to various versions of it, as well as to suitable evaluation circuits which enable optimum adaptation, of the sensor to the most varied measuring functions. By way of example, there is a detailed descripton of the requirements to be met by the sensor for a specific application. There is also a report on a mathematical model which provides a good description of shading-ring sensors with regard to many parameters, such as temperature and operating frequency. This theoretical basis, coupled with practical experience, led to the development of an efficient computer program which aids the designer in the design and optimization of a sensor system, thus enabling quick adaptation of the sensor to special measuring tasks.
