Examination of the current state of technology development in the area of optical sensor processing indicates that the techniques have considerable potential, especially in the field of the automatic airborne detection and identification of ground targets. However, although the potential exists, a considerable research effort is still required if it is to be realised. The end result could be a robust and truly real-time system of considerable capability. There is a need to support such an activity with adequate modelling of the perception capability of the human visual system if information is to be properly displayed and then utilised.
