The introduction of electric and hybrid vehicles (EHV) will place new and heavy demands on the manufacturing infrastructure. Of particular concern are components unique to EHV where substitutes from ICEV (internal combustion engine vehicle) production are not available. A generalized production model for EHV has been developed along with a mortality model. Combining production data (births) with mortality data (deaths) produces an EHV population model. A generalized battery failure model has been developed which is applied to the EHV population model to determine battery replacement demand. New vehicle production data plus battery replacement data produce a battery demand model. Results indicate that battery demand is very sensitive to the growth rate of EHV production and battery life. And, the indication is that battery production will act as a binding constraint to EHV production and inhibit EHV commercialization.
