Microcomputers, which are some of the most sophisticated and most important representations of modern electronics, are on their way to fulfil different and difficult tasks even in railway signalling. Their advantages are monifold - compared with former, relay-based techniques, but these advantages are outweighed by some non negligible drawbacks like reduced robustness, higher sensitivity to environmental factors like temperature, humidity, electromagnetical interference etc. One of the most difficult but also most interesting and fascinating challenges is the application of microcomputers in those fields of railway signalling, where a fail-safe reaction of the controlling equipment is a must as it is in interlocking stations, automatic train control, remote control systems, operation control centres etc. Unfortunately all these kinds of control systems vary considerably in respect of the amount of necessary hardware, as well as environmental factors, reliability ratings and other factors.
