Image Understanding aims at the development of intelligent computer vision. DARPA sponsored research in IU is structured to develop a synergism between complementary scientific areas to develop techniques in support of a wide range of applications. The ultimate goal is development of techniques which are extensible to both a range of imagery and to a range of tasks. Efforts within the program range from the development of a cohesive theory of vision to the hardware issues of processing images. Figure 7 summarizes the relation between the major thrusts of the program. For more detailed information, the interested reader is referred to the Proceedings of the semi-annual IU Workshops which are available from the Defense Documentation Center.
