Current state-of-the-art in protective organic coatings for US Air Force aircraft is reviewed. Aliphatic polyurethanes from the basis for protective coatings which are in use for general surface protection, camouflage, thermal flash resistance and corrosion protection of metallic and composite aircraft skins. Elastomeric polyurethane und fluorocarbon coatings are utilized for aircraft radomes and antenna covers where the coating must possess combinations of rain erosion resistance, dielectric transmission properties, conductivity for antistatic protection, thermal flash resistance, and camouflage colors. Currently used coatings materials and processes typically result in significant solvent emissions which are unacceptable from environmental and safety/health requirements and research and development effort to reduce the overall operating and support costs for Air Force aircraft coatings including solvent emission control, has been undertaken by the US Air Force Wright Aeronautical Laboratories (AFWAL) Materials Laboratory. Efforts to develop high solids coatings, waterborne coatings, encapsulated corrosion inhibitors and durable, cleanable coatings are described. Increasing emphasis in advanced techniques for removal of aircraft coatings is also described.
