The United States presently consumes about 1/3 of the world's daily crude oil production, importing 1/3 more petroleum than is required by all its automobiles. One alternative means of addressing this modern confern of foreign oil dependence is the implementation of a relatively old idea, the electric vehicle (EV). Southern California Edison (SCE) has been actively investigating the potential merits of EVs for the past ten years, including the ongoing road-testing and evaluation of numerous domestic and foreign EVs in support of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). SCE's EV activities and implications for the nation and State of California are discussed.
