Spread spectrum techniques are increasingly used in the design of tactical digital data links. However, these designs are usually based on worstcase jamming, whereas actual jamming levels can span several orders of magnitude. Ideally a data link system should be capable of adapting to the channel controlled by the jammer. A data link design that can trade data rate for jam resistance will optimize system capabilities. This paper presents the variable-data-rate/variable-jam-resistance concept. Technology and cost considerations lead to a hybrid spread spectrum approach, resulting in an optimized mix of technologies based on cost/performance trades. A variable-data-rate/variable-jam-resistant laboratory model has been constructed that demonstrates the viability of this approach. The paper concludes with a discussion of system applications utilizing this capability.
