The naval Ocean Systems Center (NOSC) is presently engaged in a project to complete early development of a fibre optic data bus to allow digital data transmission between approximately 100 seperate end users. This project is in support of projected Marine Corp requirements. The requirements analyses has determined that a passive bus to service 16 or 32 users, (inside one field enclosure) would satisfy system requirements. One arm of this basic radial bus structure would connect this enclosure to others through a central node that would include signal amplification. The bus protocol (command, response) and signalling rate (1 Mbps) are also compatible with MIL-STD-1553B (airborne data bus) requirements. The present end user rate is estimated to be 16 Kbps therefore, the 1 Mbps bus rate was found to be satisfactory even if all 16 users would require 100% bus access at the 16 Kbps maximum rate.
