The Space Shuttle will probably be launched into orbit sometime next year. Each flight will carry a number of scientific instruments for experimentation and research. One series of experiments may involve shooting lasers into the earth's atmosphere. Experiments proposed include: determination of water vapor profiles over large land and sea areas where evaporation is important; measurements of species such as O3, H2O, NH3, the chlorofluoromethanes, CCl4, C2H4, CO2, CO, CH4, N2O, and HCl with infrared lasers; vertical distribution mapping of ozone concentration; and determination of OH radicals (which are intimately involved with catalytic cycles of ozone destruction) in the upper atmosphere by the observation of remote fluorescence stimulated with a pulsed laser.
