There are three major subcategories of the transverse type defect which occur commonly in U.S. railroading practice. The oldest is the transverse fissure. Its origin is associated with the occurrence of a hydrogenflake within the head of rails that have not been control cooled or vacuum degassed at some stage in their manufacturing history. More than one transverse fissure may occur within a single rail. The two other defects, the compound fissure and the detail fracture, initiate at discontinuities which have developed horizontally within the rail head over a period of service. After a period, the crack turns into the transverse vertical plane. The compound fissure tends to initiate at a depth of 3/8 to 50+ inch within the center region of the rail head, while the detail fracture typically initiates at a somewhat shallower depth from a shell (horizontal delamination) or from one or more inclusions under the gauge corner of the rail.
