In using the etchable lengths of charged particles in meteoritical and lunar crystals as a means of assigning atomic numbers to cosmic-ray primaries, it is necessary to have reliable calibration data with known heavy ions. Results of a systematic study of etchable lengths of both fresh and fossil heavy-ion tracks in terrestrial as well as extraterrestrial crystals are reported in this paper using a number of polishing, etching and observational procdures.
