The Ironbridge at Coalbrookdale is one of Britain's best known industrial monuments. Since its opening in 1779 it has been regarded as proof of the skill and ingenuity of 18th century fabricators. Principles of fabrication resemble those used in carpentry, extensive use being made of the dovstail, shoulder and mortise joints in conjunction with wedges. At terminal connections at the base of some of the shorter ribs, close examination has revealed that joints have been made by on-site casting of metal between two contecting pre-cast sections.
