As part of a programme aimed at demonstrating the potential advantages of an uncooled flame tube in controlling the level of pollutants at gas turbine engine idle conditions, a REFEL silicon carbide flame tube has been undergoing a series of combustion tests in the Lucas Burnley Laboratories. Some cracks were observed in the flame tube after testing at a mean exhaust temperature of 1200C and thermal point tests have been carried out to indicate the temperature distribution on the flame tube; from these results a finite element stress analysis has been carried out. A statistical failure analysis, using published unit strength figures for silicon carbide, has shown a high probability of failure at the 1200C exhaust temperature condition. Strength data used in the analysis will be confirmed at a later date when beam test specimens are cut from the cracked flame tube. The effect of mechanical loading via the flame tube supports has also been investigated and its effect on the thermal failure analysis established.
