A pipeline is to be built beneath the seafloor in Long Island Sound on the east coast of the US. A trench will be dredged and the pipeline placed. This study investigated how long it would take natural sedimentation processes to fill the trench and cover the pipe. A US Army Corps of Engineers model was used to simulate both the settling of solids from the water column to the seafloor, and the scour and transport of bed sediment. The numerical results indicated that the pipe may be covered within a year. To fill the trench back to near the level of the bed would have a timeframe of several years.
