The Microwave Landing System (MLS) has the ability to support curved and steep angle approaches and provides improved precision approach guidance when compared with the current Instrument Landing System (ILS).
These MLS characteristics produce reduced inter‐arrival spacing when compared with ILS procedures and therefore increase runway capacity if the runway occupancy time is not the limiting factor.
This paper considers the effect of MLS on runway capacity at British regional airports. Single runway and intersecting runways operations are examined.
