An EU-funded project entitled ‘Apollo’ aims at the development and prototyping of an intelligent tyre, which is able to detect the current state of adhesion contact between the tyre and the road. The data can be supplied to superior vehicle dynamics control systems in order to increase traffic safety. Different sensor approaches are developed and tested. A highly demanding topic is the design of evaluation algorithms for the sensor data. For this purpose, simplified, physically based tyre models have been developed, which cover local tyre tread deformations for pure longitudinal and lateral slip conditions as well as for combined slip. A brush-type tyre model is used for this purpose. The integration of the forces and moments is achieved by adding the areas of two triangles and a rectangle to reduce the effort of considering single tread lugs. The global tyre deformations, that is the lateral and the longitudinal stiffnesses of the tyre contact patch relative to the rim, is modelled by simple approaches such as a function of the inflation pressure.
