This study expands on the previous work that developed an identification method for a ‘conservative system’. By extending the method to a nonconservative nonlinear system, the approach proposed herein enables the identification of the functional form of the nonlinear restoring forces in a general dissipative system based on measured response data. It does not depend on a priori information about the type of model to identify the nonlinear restoring forces. The workability of the proposed method is verified through numerical experiments.
