This article is based on a study, ‘Ocean’s Shipbuilding Experience’, undertaken in April 1976 and updated in January 1977 and January 1978, which investigated the company’s experience in ship construction in the UK and abroad. The investigation applied only to ships built for the Ocean Steam Ship Company and its principal associate companies, and vessels built for Ocean prior to it subsuming the Elder Dempster Line in 1965, in which it was the major shareholder. China Navigation Company vessels were not included in the study. After putting into context, the shift by British shipowners to ordering abroad, we look at some of the classes of ships Ocean included in the study built domestically and abroad and compare accordingly.
