Nodal accessibility of air transportation is determined by both the location of a city and the structure of airline networks. Since the deregulation of airline industry in the United States in 1978, major carriers have increased hub‐and‐spoke operations. This study examines whether or not the increased hub‐and‐spoke operations affected nodal accessibility of air transportation during the period between 1985 and 1989. Three measures of accessibility are defined in this study: the Relative Shimbel Index (α), the First‐order Accessibility Index (β), and the Second‐order Accessibility Index (γ). Among them, the γindex is most appropriate for evaluating nodal accessibility of air transportation. The spatial pattern of changes in nodal accessibility during the study period suggests that such changes are due to the national trend in economic and demographic growth, rather than caused by the increased hub‐and‐spoke operations since deregulation.
