The swimming pool on large passenger ships creates challenges for structural designers. Designers have to take into account the effect of the large opening and its reinforcement on the strength of deck structures. In this paper, experimental and finite element analyses are presented on the ultimate compressive strength of two double-deck structures with a large opening on the upper deck. Buckling collapse behaviour of the upper and lower decks are investigated during the progressive collapse of double-deck structures. Comparison of the experimental results shows that the structural reinforcement for deck opening increases about 29% the ultimate compressive strength and changes the overall buckling and collapse behaviour of double-deck structures. The finite element analysis quantifies the effect of reinforcing large openings to improve the structural strength of perforated structures. A design methodology is put forwards for reinforcements based on equivalent buckling and ultimate strength concept.
