The communication environment of wireless ad hoc networks is complex. Signal fading, inter-node interference, and other factors lead to a high bit error ratio. Media access control (MAC) layer control messages are responsible for network maintenance and resource allocation. Errors in the MAC layer control messages will affect the normal operation of the network. A reliable transmission assurance mechanism can improve the transmission success probability when the network environment is poor. There are few studies on the reliable transmission mechanism which consider the characteristics of MAC layer control messages, such as periodicity and timeliness. The analytical models of forward error correction coding, hybrid automatic repeat request, and network coding mechanisms are established to analyze the influence of channel quality on overhead, the success rate of transmission, delay, and resource efficiency. Then numerical simulation is carried out to analyze the performance of various mechanisms under different channel quality.
