Abstract The success of any commercial industrial undertaking has to be measured in terms of financial performance. The most brilliant technical innovation is a failure if it results in money lost by the entrepreneur or his shareholders — or, indeed, at divisional or operating level. Robots are no exception to this rule. No matter what the social benefits are, no matter how clever the technology, no matter how pretty the robot is to watch, every proposed investment in robotics has to pass the test of a critical financial appraisal.
